DMT Residency Program

The Douglas Morrison Theater Residency program will select four established performing arts companies from Hayward to be Residents for an initial period of 3 years. This program is designed to support permanency and stabilization for beloved performing arts groups in the Hayward Area District who have been displaced due to the pandemic or finance hardship.  

Residents would receive

  • Dedicated Performance and Rehearsal Space: The program would provide a permanent or long-term space for rehearsals and performances. This would include a well-equipped theater, rehearsal studios, and other necessary facilities, tailored to the group's specific needs in terms of size, acoustics, and technical requirements.  

  • Administrative and Operational Space: The program would offer office space, and use of our box office systems. 

  • Artistic Development Funding: To encourage creative growth, the program would provide a modest $1000 stipend for new projects, experimental works, or collaborations with other artists and groups.  

  • Free costume, prop, and scenic rentals: Available through the Winton Warehouse for DMT shows. 

  • Professional Development and Training: 1-2 opportunities for the group's members to enhance their skills through training sessions on a range of topics from finance/sustainability to new technological tools in the arts. 

  • Marketing and Audience Development Support: Assistance in developing and implementing marketing strategies to grow and diversify audiences, including digital marketing, community engagement, and branding. 

The District would expect: 

  • Community Outreach and Education Programs: The resident group would be required to deliver 1-2 workshops and open dress rehearsals through our Arts Access Program to encourage youth and underserved populations in our community. 

  • Box Split for Shows: For shows that charge for entry, a box split would be required at a rate aligned with the cost of entry.  

  • Two Shows for the DMT Presents Season: The resident group would work with the Recreation Supervisor to select two performances of the highest caliber to be a part of the annual DMT Presents Season.
